Hi all:
I wanted to learn about the experiences of wheelchair users and other
mobility impaired Federationists in large gatherings such as the National
Convention.
I haven't attended a National Convention since I began using my chair.
>How do you navigate through the crowd? >
I appreciate when people will say things loudly like "registration here" and
follow the noise. I move very slowly and have found that once people figure
out that I'm in a power chair they generally will say something to others
near by or move over and I don't recall it being much of a problem except by
elevators. One year there was someone on the elevator saying for people in
chairs and that really helped keep elevators from filling up which was my
biggest obstacle.

>What are the attitudes of other federationists toward you and your mobility
device.>
Generally, really curious and helpful.
>Is there anything the Federation can do to help to make things easier?>
I think making sure that when there are trips available clearly letting
people know about accessibility. I recall one time being very excited about
going on a tour and they assured me many times that the bus had a lift but
when I went to get on they said, "Fold up your chair and we'll put it in the
bus" But that wasn't possible for me a power chair user, and I remember
being so disappointed.
>What experiences have wheelchair users who need hoyer lifts had in doctor's
offices and hospitals, have thy been denied service?>
I've always been told to go to the hospital whenthe Hoyer was necessary
because the doctor couldn't accommodate it and when going to urgent care
they said they had no way to get me on the table and sent me to the ER with
a note saying insurance would need to cover it because they couldn't handle
my situation in urgent care.
Finally, I'm wondering if it might be both useful and fun to have a virtual
meeting on ?Zoom, so we can actually talk to each other?>
I'd love to meet on Zoom.
Thanks for letting me pick your brains.
