Bonnie,
Jordan started freshman Spanish his eight grade year (they offered the full
high school Spanish I at his middle school). This year he took Spanish V,
and it was an AP course. He is not capable of fully translating yet, but he
loves Spanish and wants to become fluent. He also is interested in learning
French now too. There are no Spanish speakers in our family, I had some high
school and remember enough to talk with him about simple things, like what
do you want to drink, is your home work done, clean the bathroom now!, where
is the...etc. and did so to provide him some practice. He tries himself to
find speakers to talk with, and when he finds someone some where he goes for
it--otherwise he learned a lot this year by listening to the BBC Spanish
news and Spanish television and soap operas. I know some immigrants who
learned a lot of English by watching T.V., smile.
He just had a great compliment, a federationist who grew up in a Spanish
speaking home told Jordan, Jordan's spanish was more correct and proper than
what he had from growing up. That was cool to hear.

Carrie, Is Jordan's Spanish learned from school or are there Spanish
speakers in your family? How did he learn it well enough to translate?
