I had a similar experience where I had checked in. I was by myself and I
heard an announcement that my flight was departing at a different gate so
with a couple of questions asked of passengers, I found the gate, not too
far away. However, as I sat reading, or whatever, I noticed that there were
not many people coming to that gate. It was approaching the time I was to
leave so I got up and as I did so, I heard my name called back at the other
gate. Man, you never saw a lady with a long white cane go so fast back to
her gate. To this day, I simply don't know what was said that sounded like a
gate change to me. I really believe that looking at the watch often is the
key. Thankfully, the speaker was working and luckily they did call my name.
Actually, worse than missing a flight would be getting on the wrong plane.
Thankfully, airports are a pretty safe place to make a mistake and a good
place to learn. I bet these girls will think of this more as an adventure.
Oh, yes, last summer Aubrie and I had a friend take us to the wrong airport
in Dallas because we didn't know which one we were to go to. We were able to
call our friend before she was too far away and she came back and got us and
we went to the right airport and made our flight. All this was possible
mostly because you can look everything up on the computer. We thought it was
an adventure. One other thing. Whenever someone tells me that they are
getting someone to help me, I just say, "Just point me in the right
direction and when they come, if I need help I'll let them know." Usually, I
have gotten where I need to before that person ever gets there or they can't
find me because I've gone too far on my own. It is amazing how many times I
have met very nice passengers who I have casually walked and talked with
while going to my gate.
