[blindkid] Homeschooling Blind Children

The public school is not required to support homeschoolers. If the child
has medical issues, it might be possible for the public school to classify
the child as home bound and provide services at home. That would probably
require a doctor's assessment that the child can't go to school.

It's very difficult to get blindness services if you are homeschooling.
Your friend may want to talk with the school district and see if they are
willing to provide any services.

For more details about the do it yourself path, your friend could join the
blindhomeschooler yahoo listserv and ask questions of those parents who've
chosen to go it alone.

Subject: [blindkid] Homeschooling Blind Children

I have a friend in Indiana that is homeschooling her daughter who is in 2nd
grade. She was born with only part of her brain. Her grandma tells me she is
very intelligent but is going through alot of therapy in an attempt to
increase mobility in her one hand. She has not learned braille yet.

My question is, if you choose to homeschool, is the public school under
obligation to send someone on a consult basis for vision services? What
options might she have for vision services (She does not live near the blind
school-nor does she want to send her away with her medical issues).

Thanks,
Linda Breger
