Hi, My daughters has been Blind since birth, she is now 10. Teachers/Specialists seem to know not to make a HUGE issue out of her successfully completing a Mobility skill, ECT and commend her just like they would a child learning any independence skill. But, the general public?! In my experience, Yes they do get excited and have a look of OMG! WOW! on their faces and sometimes overly exaggerate a simple skill well done. I simply have Josey say, Thank You. And, thank them too. It's not a big deal, a lot are just curious and it's great to interact with the public, educate them and make them aware that simple independent skills are a normal part of daily living!! - Lucy

When there is a reasonable way to point it out without making a "situation" of it, I like to explain that my daughter is just like most kids and she does pretty much the same things, she just does things with slightly different skills than some other children.

I learned today that Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) simply turned off their DVS feeds for programming a while back. Sounds like they got very little response from people who wanted DVS when they turned it off, but I think that is probably because so few potential users were even aware the service had been offered.

I would very much like to get DVS running here in Georgia on PBS again and if this problem is widespread, to start addressing this on more of a national level. As much as my daughter appreciated the DVS programs, I can't imagine there would not me a lot more kids and adults who would benefit from increased numbers of shows being broadcast with audio descriptions...

Just ignore "Descriptive Video Service" and deal with your Default Audio Track. It works for me the same way on the Comcast Box and with TiVo.

I have also borrowed DVS DVD's for free from the local library and found some at Red Box for the usual $1 / day rental. The trick there is to see what has been released with DVS because Red Box doesn't lost that feature and many libraries are also unaware of DVS content.
