Debby, Be aware that the Colorado summer program will only benefit your daughter if she has no other disabilities. My daughter should be there now, but I pulled from the program the second week because they were not teaching her what they claimed they would teach her. My daughter has slight CP and was not able to keep up with her peers, and they basically wanted her to leave because she was slowing down everyone else. She liked going to classes and got a lot out of them, but because she couldn't keep up (after they said they would accept her with her limitations|) they basically wanted her out. I was quite angry and complained to the chairman, who I found to be very insensitive to the situation.
My daughter said her peers were high functioning blind students, and my daughter wondered why they were even there. No one is sighted on their staff, no one. That means there is no measurement of how your child is progressing. I was told that students learn to do their laundry, and her counselor treated her like she should know what she was supposed to do. I was told that they would learn how to cook meals, well my daughter lost 10 lbs. in 1.5 weeks because all they ate at the apartments was frozen food they bought from Walmart along with lots of other junk food. I was told they were going to teach the students to use knives, and different kitchen utensils, etc. It seemed to me that the promises made by their Brent Batron was a sales pitch to get us to sign up for the program. The worse part is that I started the process in February and lost all chances of finding another program for the summer. It was a total loss for our daughter. I
was truly shocked that a program sponsored by the National Federation for the Blind would discriminate against a child just because she had trouble walking. I cannot remember when I have been so angry, not to mention losing faith in the organization.
If you want more detailed info to help you make a decision, please email me directly at bo.page at sbcglobal.net and I will be happy to give you more details, names, etc.
Regards,
Bo

>Last appeal for assistance in getting Division of Blind Services here in FL to help Winona attend the CO Center for the Blind next summer. I know DBS doesn't like to fund programs out of state, but she really wants to attend the CO program, and we like the NFB philosophy that will come from there.
