Hello:

     The way I usually convert a big pdf file is to use Kurzweil K1000. 
K1000 will get the text from the file or if it is images, do OCR on the 
images. I understand the OpenBook from Freedom Scientific can do the same 
thing. Demos of this software are available, so it is possible to try before 
you buy. Hope this helps.
