For more than 93 years, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU) has been at the forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this country. The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department of the ACLU's National Office in New York City seeks law students for a Legal Internship for the Summer of 2014, with a focus on legislative advocacy to end mass incarceration.

OVERVIEW

Through its affiliates, members, and national staff, the ACLU has a presence in every state across the country.  Each affiliate works with its state's legislature and policymakers to further the protection and advancement of civil liberties.  Advocacy and Policy staff partner with ACLU affiliates and National Chapters throughout the country to protect civil liberties by developing effective advocacy strategies at the state level. The Advocacy and Policy team is part of an interdisciplinary team that develops state-based legislative and public policy campaigns in ACLU priority issue areas.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

The Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department is offering Summer Legal Interns the opportunity to work on state-based legislative strategies to reduce incarceration and provide support to ACLU affiliates around the country. The interns will work alongside the Advocacy and Policy Counsel and Policy Associate who are focusing on over incarceration.

The internship requires a 10 to 12 week commitment and is full-time. Arrangements can be made for work/study or course credit.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES

The intern will gain experience by:

 *   Conducting legal and policy research;
 *   Researching and analyzing opportunities for criminal justice policy reform in states around the country;
 *   Participating in discussions with the entire Advocacy team on building and supporting strategic legislative and advocacy campaigns;

*         Researching and analyzing state legislation, including the impact of previously passed legislation related  to over-incarceration;

*         Working on the development of advocacy materials.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

This legal internship is open to all law students who possess the following:
*         A strong interest in working to end mass incarceration;
*         Excellent analytical, research and communication skills;
*         Ability to clearly and succinctly memorialize research in writing;
*         Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the initiative to see projects through to completion;
*         Experience with criminal justice issues, policy advocacy, public education, community organizing, and/or legislative lobbying, preferred;
*         Strong commitment to civil rights and civil liberties issues.
