I know that several people have found InftyEditor to be useful. It is
free:

If you are versed in TeX / LaTeX, I know that many people have found
MathType useable by entering LaTeX directly into the Word document, and
then using the "Toggle MathType / TeX" command to turn all the TeX
entries into viewable equations for printing or sending the doc to
sighted users. You can download a free 30-day trail version if you want
to try out that approach:

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am a graduate student at the University of Arizona. There are a lot
of math equations in my research work. I use mathplayer to read those
equations. But mathplayer can not edit math equation. Could anyone
tell me what software I can edit math equations, please. Thank you
very much.

Best regards

Dawei
