Well, isince Dr. Nemeth and Dr. Kapperman are participating, I don't think
braille will be excluded. If it is, then I am with you in your
disappointment.

Jose

Neil will probably give a further analysis of this situation.
In general MathPlayer works fairly independently of screen readers (turning
MathML expressions into strings for speech and then passing them on to the
screen reader), so a lot of this work can be done independently of a
particular screen reader vendor, and benefit all screen reader users.
When it comes to braille, this press release does not state whether braille
support will be added, but Neil has said previously on this list that
braille will be included in MathPlayer 3.
I am not sure about the specific interactions between a third party app and
the screen reader when it comes to braille, and if braille is left out of
this development altogether, I will be very disappointed, and will claim
this is still sorely lacking for blind folks interested in math (a few
people may be able to do math without braille, I have found it near
impossible, so have many of my blind peers).
That being said, it is quite possible that GW Micro (who are mentioned in
the release) simply showed more interest than FS, who are often (and I do
not mean this as any sort of screen reader vendor bashing) not interested in
more specialized projects in my experience. I also would like to see NVDA
engage more with math and science.

May be we can, as users, encouraged them to get on board. I believe Jaws and
NVDA compatibility is near essential for this project to fully succeed,, if
a particular screen reader is required to render the math.
Cheers
-B
