[Blindmath] MathType and Duxbury

I'm sorry, George, but the last e-mail I saw before replying was
from Caryn. I am relatively new to listservs, and so I'm not
sure exactly how it all works. Anyway, thank you for the advice.

Regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I'm not Caryn, but work closely with her.

I suspect your flash drive issue is more of a local one. Perhaps
you
have it set to view specific file extensions as opposed to files
of
all types.

If you tab down to the File Name: field, and then one more, you
will
find a button which in fact is a drop down list. Down arrow on
that
button and you should see one for "All Files (*.*)". This should
then show files as well as folders of all types.

George.

Dear Caryn,

Thank you so much. I was able to translate a Word document
containing equations into Braille format. However, I am not sure
if
this is relevant, but I am quite new to Windows 7, and when I
tried
to open the Word document on my USB flash drive, I was able to
view
both files and folders when opening from Windows Explorer, but
only
folders when opening in Duxbury. I am not sure how I can solve
this
discrepancy, namely, be able to view files in the flash drive's
root
directory within the Open dialog box in Duxbury. I will be
starting
college very soon, and I would like to be able to solve as many
problems and glitches as possible before professors send me
documents
which I must translate before they are readable.

Regards,
Daniel

Hello again Daniel.

Here?™s one more note. When opening a Word document with
MathType
objects in DBT, there?™s no need to choose the DBT template
called
BANA Nemeth in order to get braille using Nemeth Code. In fact,
use
of that DBT template is intended for a Word document that was
created
using the Word template called BANA Nemeth. You can choose any
DBT
template marked as English
(American) to get braille math in Nemeth Code.

Please feel free to contact me off list.

Sincerely,
Caryn

Hi Daniel.

I?™ll add a quick comment to go along with Bob Mathews?? reply.

When you have a Word document containing MathType objects, you
just
open the document in DBT. Don?™t use MathType?™s Convert
equations
option first.

Sincerely,
Caryn

Hi Daniel,

The best place to start when learning how to use MathType with
DBT is
with our article on the subject:
http://www.dessci.com/en/support/MathType/works_with.asp#!target=
duxbury
_braille_translator

It's pretty descriptive, but if you have any difficulty with the
process, please let us know.

Hello,

I'm Daniel Gillen, a totally blind entering college freshman.
For those of you who have been on the list for quite a while now,
you
may remember my e-mail that I sent out about which program might
be a
better solution for translating math into a Braille document
through
Duxbury. I have since installed MathType, and tried to translate
a Word
document containing math text into a BRF file which I can read on
my
BrailleNote's Braille display.
What I first did was select the "Convert Equations" option from
the
MathType tab on the Word 2010 ribbon menus. I tried converting
"MathType and Equation Editor Equations" to "Text Using MathType
Translator" before importing the document into Duxbury using the
"BANA
Nemeth" translation scheme. However, in place of the intended
math
chunks (equations, expressions, etc.) in the Duxbury document),
all I
saw were the XML tags (the coded text strings enclosed by angle
brackets
<>). Could anyone please give me any tips on how I can properly
translate equations in a Word document into Nemeth Braille
through
Duxbury, assuming that MathType is the program used to render
those
print equations in the first place?

Thank you,
Daniel
