[Blindmath] Successfully set up the TI 84!

I have received the TI 84 my son will be using this year and was able to
easily setup the calculator with the movie that was installed on the flash
drive that came with it. If you are having technical trouble with the pod
broadcast - you might want to view or listen to the movie at this link:
http://tech.aph.org/Orion TI-84 Plus Documents/Orion TI-84 Plus Getting
Started Video.mov The movie is made so that it will benefit anyone - those
with full vision, partial vision and no vision. You have to listen for a
few minutes to descriptions of the calculator -but then it describes setting
it up and orients the user to the features that are unique to this
calculator. For some reason though when I copied this link in it is not
showing as a Hyperlink. If you copy and paste into your browser it does
work though. Susan Osterhaus was nice enough to send me this video and I
found it very helpful. It is also on the flash drive that comes with the
calculator.

My only comment that might make this setup process more helpful to nonMath
people is that it would be nice if the setup video were referenced in the
first paragraph of the documentation that comes with the calculator. This
documentations informs you there is a user guide on the accompanying flash
drive - but did not reference the video. My son's calculator came early -
so it also needed to be upgraded. I think the ones that are shipping now do
not need to be upgraded - but if yours does - you will get a notice like the
one I attached. It upgraded easily.

We took it to school today and his Math Support teacher seemed quite
excited to get it. They used them for the past two days Graphing
Polynomials and exploring limits but are taking a quiz today so will not use
them today. I set this up for him because he has 5 tests today so he was
busy with the different projects required for those tests - his AP US
History test is quite involved today. However, after viewing the
orientation in the video he was quite comfortable with the calculator.

Hopefully getting it connected to his computer will go as smoothly this
weekend!

HI! I really want to hear the Eye in Success pod casts, but they keep
looping back to the beginning after only a couple of minutes. I am listening
on my iPad. Is that the problem? Thanks

I don't know about the podcast, but I had the opportunity to get a demo from
Sina and I can say as a Community College math person this calculator is
amazing. It has the ti-84 body with an add on piece so it is a little
longer but the great thing is that it will do everything that the TI-84
does!!

Thanks a tonne sir for the brief explanation regarding this calculator.
though I am not using any such accessible calculator till now except the
windows default calculator, but on this website there are number of very
useful tutorial such as tutorial regarding audiographing calculator which
has the powerful functionality of dealing with matrices, math track, which
is for dealing with any graph and many more which I wanted to download for
my reference.

OH you didn't have to do that. They actually started calling it Orion
through the podcast so that is fine I just noticed right up front that the
title didn't' have it in it and that is really fine it was just a knee jerk
reaction.

HI! I really want to hear the Eye in Success pod casts, but they keep
looping back to the beginning after only a couple of minutes. I am listening
on my iPad. Is that the problem? Thanks

My neighbor just got a TI-84. Is there a module that can be added on to

It is a full unit. Sorry but we had to make a slight modification to the
TI-84 to make it accessible. Unfortunately even if we sell them to every
blind STEM student and employee there wouldn't be enough need to get TI to
change their older flag ship units to just connect to the device.

I think that they have to make a couple of mods to the unit, so they want to
sell you the calculator as well as the add-on module.

Who makes the mods to the unit? Just curious because I am working on a
project
right now that uses off the shelf hardware but will probably need to make
mods
to it to make it accessible.

Peace,

If you are looking for a company to do this a good one to look at is Orbit
Research and yes they are the ones that did the modifications for the TI-84
for us here at APH. They are also the ones who make the TI-36 talking
scientific calculator which is a modified TI-36 and they also make the IBill
money reader. You can find Them at orbitresearch.com

Who makes the mods to the unit? Just curious because I am working on a
project right now that uses off the shelf hardware but will probably need to
make mods to it to make it accessible.

Peace,
David

I think that they have to make a couple of mods to the unit, so they want to
sell you the calculator as well as the add-on module.

I'm glad to hear other people have been having trouble with the podcasts...
I
thought it was just me. *smile*

My neighbor just got a TI-84. Is there a module that can be added on to
that to
make it accessible or is it an entirely different enclosure than the
off-shelf
version?
