I was curious about this and the only way I could find to get more details
was to listen to the archive of a recording of the HumanWare webinar given
Sept. 26. I don't recommend doing this unless you need to know the latest
for their VictorStream and Apex. I couldn't find any way to avoid listening
to the entire hour before there was a bit about the new Nemeth option at the
end.
Here's what I learned about the new option. When a student is typing a
default braille document on an Apex, they will be able to enter a new
special keystroke which inserts a tag into the document to flag a switch to
Nemeth math. If speech is on, then what is entered during Nemeth math will
be spoken using something like Nemeth MathSpeak. Also, if the document is
saved as a print Word document, the narrative text and the math will be
interpreted. However, the interpretation or backtranslation of Nemeth math
is only to the Apex ad hoc horizontal or linear math, not to properly
typeset print math. So, for example, a Nemeth opening simple fraction
indicator is written in print as "openfrac." As best as I could tell, they
failed to include the corresponding closefrac but I may have misunderstood.
It also appears that not all of Nemeth math is covered but just the subset
of Nemeth math in the Apex Nemeth tutorial that is already available on the
Apex.

As the person who wrote the blog post, I obviously do think it is bad news.
The only way Microsoft will fix it if users like the people who read this
list and use MathPlayer give them a call and complain. It is hard to
believe it would take even close to a person-day to fix the IE10 bug.
Without pressure to fix the bug from users, they aren't motivated to fix
their crash. So please call and don't assume someone else will do it --
everyone who cares needs to do it because they need to hear from lots of
people to make it a priority.

Neil, what is the best way for us to let Microsoft know our views?
Sometimes these companies are so large it is hard to know where to go to
let the people who need to know hear our comments.

There could be a addon for Firefox, that way people who use Linux and
Windows can use MathML. Then by chance Microsoft decides not to fix the
problem, MathML access can continue as expected.

They are a big organization, and we don't have a great way to contact the
important people directly. I do have a couple of IE developer email addrs,
but I don't think it is appropriate I put them out to a wide list. The
method we suggest in the post is:
"You can report Internet Explorer issues directly to them at
http://connect.microsoft.com/IE. If you can contact their Technical Support
Staff by telephone your report will carry even more weight. You can contact
Microsoft Technical Support at (800) 936-5700."
Again, getting this fix is a matter of numbers: the more people who
complain about the IE10 bug, the more likely it is that they will fix it.

Thanks. That's a good contact. Rob Sinclair was on early rounds of talks
we had that were more focused on the IE11 problem where they said they
might remove support for the technology MathPlayer depends on. He wasn't on
the latest round of talks about the IE10 bug.

Hi. My name is Brett and I am so psyched to find this list. Though I am not
an advanced math student I am taking it in college and I'm struggling quite
a bit with technology and accessibility. I hope this list will be a great
resource and look forward to learning anything I can about how to make this
nightmare a little more bearable.
So I wanted to say hi and I want to thank you in advance for any questions I
might have. Again I know next to nothing about the current trends in access
technology when it comes to math. I haven't been to school for awhile!

Brett,
First off, welcome to the list!! You will in fact find yourself among some
very helpful and insightful individuals here. I for one, find the issues
and solutions here and on the Computer Science list among my favorite reads
theese days!
A fair number of the posts even require me to work a bit for my enjoyment--
there is lots of cutting edge knowledge to be learned about here.
As someone who is recently blind, and interested in pursuing math as a
potential career, I know how you feel with regard to feeling new to
accessible tech & math.
Something I keep telling myself I need to do is go through the archives and
read old posts, but I have as of now, failed to do so.
I'm sure there is someone here with answers to your questions, and will make
the nightmares a bit easier.
Respectfully,
Ian C. Bray
