[BlindMath] Typing Math and Science Quickly and Understandably

I am a humanities (philosophy) and law school graduate, not a mathematics or science graduate. I didn't find taking notes in class to be particularly useful. I took notes from the texts instead, influenced to some extent by what was happening in the classroom. In my experience, much of the work is between me and the texts, but the social situation and the ability to learn from others also plays a fundamental role. I couldn't have succeeded without being in the environment. I couldn't have written my Ph.D. successfully without the availability of my supervisors and others to discuss the work, often critically, and to recommend what directions to take.

So it seems that despite disciplinary differences, my experiences parallel those of some who have already commented in this discussion.

There were times in some classes where I sold the book back two weeks early at the end of the quarter, because I was finished with it.
    I utilize virtually all of the techniques that have been described over the past few days to write down my Mathematics, even though I don't have to do as much of it anymore.  I go between Linix, Windows, and Macintosh platforms, use Word, latex, and sometimes just write down quick notes in my own hybrid language I created right before I learned Braille in the early 90's.
    What I suspect is that so many different Learning theories are at play as people determine what will work best for them,  as there is no valid "learning Style".  There is no data in any research to support the existence of true learning styles to this date.  Virtually every person can be taught to utilize any manner of learning, they just might not be as proficient in as they would be in others.  I readily read and write in Braille, but much more prefer to listen to Mathematics spoken by a human voice.  My second preference is reading it with a computer and my third is reading it physically in Braille.  I prefer to do the calculations with an actual Braille writer, but would rather use Excel to write down problems I do in Statistics.
    I Use "R" and SAS readily to do advanced Statistics, but prefer to use SPSS for some tasks.  I like audio descriptions as a preview of graphs before I then analyze them in a print tactile format.  My brother says he gets a kick out of me doing my "air writing" with a finger when I try and do something like a LaPlace transform.  I literally visualize what I am writing and can almost think I see what is on my virtual page.
    I say this to basically confirm virtually everything everyone has stated over the past few days and say that there is nothing that will suit everyone.  I know I readily change when it suits me and that has helped me now earn seven STEM degrees, including three undergrad, three Masters, and a Doctorate.

    I got a kick out of your message and strategy.  I was a low-vision EE student in the '50s and early '60s.  When I first went to classes I took a tape recorder to record the lectures. After my freshman year, I had volunteer readers to read the texts, I used a 10x monocular to read the chalk boards, and I did the homework problems with magnifying glasses and pencil.  I didn't take notes.  In lab groups I seemed to be the only student who'd read the handout for the experiment ahead of time, so I organized the lab.  By the time finals rolled around, I had plenty of free time because I didn't need to cram.  If I had been totally blind then, there would have been no help with mathematics, I'd have had to figure the stuff out from listening to it, and I'd have to dictate to a volunteer for the homework and exams.  That would've been a lot tougher than what we can do today.
