[BlindMath] [ Tutorial on Using RMarkdown?

Hello,

While this link still works, and the date shown on the front page is 2018, the document hasn't been given any love for a substantial amount of time before that. I think it got updated in 2018 only because something was broken, not because anything new was added.

LURN was originally written because there was very little accessible information about using R because the R world was using a LaTeX based workflow. I made sure the blind edition added the alt tags and various other things that the LaTeX to HTML process couldn't handle, and then added a few extra bits when something visual needed extra information for a blind person's benefit. The additions in the blind edition would be less than 1% extra on top of the sighted edition. LURN is written in a LaTeX based R variant. I make the two editions from the exact same source files.

LURN was originally written for my sighted students and for the blind students who had no alternative. I needed a document I could read, so my sighted students got HTML. They also got a pdf too, but only because I could, not because I thought it necessary. I wouldn't start it today.

Once R markdown became more reliable, I thought to convert LURN to an Rmd file based process. This quickly became less necessary as plenty of other works presented in HTML were starting to appear. I haven't decided to go back to my old idea, but it wouldn't really take much to get it all going again. One major drawcard for re-visiting this project is that I set it up so that translations of the prose were easily merged with my code chunks. I would have needed native speakers of other languages to volunteer their time for that to really take off though.

In the meantime, another project got a lot more energy. BrailleR in Action is at https://R-Resources.massey.ac.nz/BrailleRInAction/ and it does get touched up from time to time. This is written in R markdown and has a much better coverage for a blind person than does LURN.

Please see my other message about Brandon's original post.

All the best,
Jonathan

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [BlindMath] Tutorial on Using RMarkdown?
Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any tutorials on how to use RMarkdown on the command line, with pandoc, or in some other accessible fashion?

My class requires all assignments to be compiled to HTML from RMarkdown, but they're using R Studio which is not super accessible.

I installed R, but it wasn't added to my path, and there's little documentation on how the different exe applications in the R bin work.

I'm on Windows 10.

Thanks,
