I disagree with this. That is like saying a kid should know his or her
screen reader before learning to play a game. No they should want to play
that game so much they learn to use their screen reader while they learn to
play their game. I know because I learned more about my screen reader when
I lost my sight and was 20 playing on BBS games than I did from sitting and
trying to figure it out on a text editor. If the kid is driven to learn
coding then he or she will learn to use the screen reader as they go. I
have seen this time and time again as long as the student has support. I am
more than willing to be that support and so are many people on line. There
is the IAccess folks on Discord, The Bits folks at ACB that are running
classes. One which I taught . They are about to run another class with
VSCode and html and markdown. They want to do it without coding this time
so they can deal with all the screen reader issues and stuff without
fighting with a coding language while you learn the VSCode environment.
After that they have some other courses coming. So checkout the ACB BITS
group.

There is also the blind programming list program-l and other s like
touching-python on groups IO. The support is out here. My email is
kperry at blinksoft.com for more info.

I don't know of a manual for coding, per se, but the student should be as
proficient as possible with any screen reader before truly trying to code.

Hi,
We have a newly blind student using jaws to learn Python with VScode.
Is there a beginner's book or manual for them to learn how use JAWS to code?
Right now, they are frustrated and confused.
They are not very proficient with JAWS.
We would like to help them get started before classes begin.
Thank you,
Anne Carpenter
