[BlindRUG] Importing Data with R 4.2.0

Hello Natasha,

Making use of the internal datasets is hugely advantageous if they meet your needs. The explicit command to make the famous iris data available is just `data(iris)`

N.B. Do not type those ` symbols. They are put in our messages to show you that they enclose the command you use.

You can see what the iris data looks like using `str(iris)`

The thing with the internal data sets is though, that they're actually sitting there ready for your use, even without using the `data()` command given above.

Importing an external data file is more difficult. As a teacher, I never invite my students to go searching for their own data. I make data sets available for them in known locations, so that I can be sure of what they will (or should) find. I do this to minimise the amount of support work I must undertake.

I would be asking for local support if you do need to import data. It is not a blindness issue. I think you might find a lot of interest in the GSS data, but finding it in the right format that is easily imported and used in your context might be more than a little over the top. I recommend liaising with the course staff to see if it is so.

Finally, it is always good that people share the version number and operating system they are using. It sometimes helps to mention the screen reader in use too. The operating system and screen reader matters more than the version of R with respect to blind users.

HTH
Jonathan

Subject: [BlindRUG] Importing Data with R 4.2.0

Hello,

My name is Natasha and I am an undergraduate student currently completing an independent study in which a professor is looking for me to complete a variety of statistical tests in R. Within the next few days, I have the task of finding an appropriate data set and ensuring it is compatible within R.

I have R 4.2.0 installed on my Windows computer. I found that there is a dataset available in R called iris. I am trying to learn how to install and download that dataset but am struggling to find the most convenient and accessible way to do so (I've tried reading different articles and watching YouTube videos for several hours, but I am more confused now than I was when I first started).

I was also trying to see if I could download a dataset from online, such as the General Social Survey (GSS) 2018 dataset, but I am finding that that may be even more challenging of a process, so I figured trying to access the iris dataset would be my best bet-I'm just unsure of how to successfully do it.

I'd be grateful for any insight and assistance anyone might be able to provide or share.

Thanks,
Natasha
