[BlindRUG] Accessibility and ggplot

Hello all,

In order to show the current impact BrailleR is having on production of graphics, I grabbed a copy of the R Graphics Cookbook by Winston Chang from GitHub and re-processed it with the BrailleR page loaded.

The results for what can be quickly delivered by BrailleR for a simple scatter plot in base and ggplot2 systems is evident at:
https://r-resources.massey.ac.nz/RGCookbook/RECIPE-QUICK-SCATTER.html

Processing of base graphics is nowhere nearly as easy. I've pretty much decided not to invest more energy into base graphics as a consequence.

The whole book, less two chapters that wouldn't process fully starts at https://r-resources.massey.ac.nz/RGCookbook/

So, the need for people to say what sorts of details we need is there. Working on an inherently inaccessible object requires assistance from a sighted person to make sure the outcome we get automatically generated by BrailleR is correct as well as informative.

I cannot do it alone. I can offer guidance as a consumer and as a teacher of sighted students, but getting text descriptions for more objects is what now holds our access back. Gwynn is working on a plan.

Jonathan

Subject: [BlindRUG] Accessibility and ggplot

Hello everyone,

RForwards is having preliminary discussions about updating ggplot to include screen reader accessibility. Our first discussion is scheduled for 22 March at 7pm in the East Coast of the USA (UTC -5). If you would like to participate please respond to this email and I will send you an invite. If that time does not work for you and you would like to be involved, please send me an email with times that are more suitable. We will record the meeting and put all notes on an etherpad to include as many people as possible.

Thanks either way and stay safe,

s. gwynn sturdevant, PhD
