Dear Darryn,
SSI is for people who have never worked but are disabled. It
provides a certain level of income support for that person and is
most often given to children to help their parents with their
living expenses and once they are grown, a small steady income.
They can work, as long as they stay under the earnings cap.
If the person is physically disabled, this is about $880.00.
If this person is Blind, the cap is higher and is at $1,580.00
this year. The Blind are the only group that has a different and
higher earnings cap than others disabilities.
SSDI is an insurence program that you pay into when you work and
theyy take out Social Security from your paycheck.
You have to work 40 quarders or 10 years paying into Social
Security, in order to collect from it if you become disabled at
some point after you are invested in SSDI.
You can still try to go back to work and even work part time as
long as you stay under the earnigs cap.
You would get a monthly check to support your self and after 18
months, you could also get Medicare to help you with your medical
coverage.
You could, after this point, go back to work and could earn up to
the earnings limit of $1,580.00 and still keep the SSDI check and
the Medicare coverage too.
You are even allowed to deduct work related expenses such as
transportation, work clothes, a lunch and any special tools or
things you need to do the job that your employer does not provide
and pay for.
As long as you stay under the "earnings Cap" or as it is also
called "the Substancial Gainful Income Limit," you can work and
collect SSDI or SSI as far as I am aware.
You can check with directory assistance for the phone number for
the local office of the State Division of Blind Services.
If you are in Florida, their main offices are in Tallahassee, but
they have offices all over the state.
They can help you with education expenses, adaptive equipment and
other things. They will help you with whatever you need to go back
to work as long as you are legally blind.
They will not really find you a job. You should do that on your
own. You will be happier that way believe me.
I can only tell you that you will not be able to collect SSI or
SSDI, at this point, unlesss you are not working and are claiming
that you can not work because of the blindness.
Once you are on SSDI you can always go back to work .
This is just the way it works.

>I read online that SSDI helps people if they have to stop working
year or more or permently but I have read from couple that if I
make under certain amount when I work that I would qualify for
this even though I work and have made 15000 this year but can't
offord to live on what I make and not able to get another job
that allows me to make more money. So I am kinda confused on
this. If anyone can tell me the contact of the blind service
like phone number and stuff I would preciate that. Once again
for the people that message me thank you for your help, hopefully
I can figure this out.
