[Blindtlk] Question Regarding Guide Dogs

My wife and I are in the same situation as Cindy describes, except in our
case my wife has the dog and I use a cane.

Usually the guide dog is on the left side of the handler, and this is how
it is for my wife. I walk on her right side and use my cane ein my right
hand as I would as if I were walking alone.

It took a little getting use to, however. At first my wife's dog was a
little nervous about my cane -- he could obviously see it in his peripheral
vision, and I think it confused and distracted him a little at first. Also,
as I think the dog thought perhaps I was leading instead of him. also, two
people and a dog can take up a fair bit of the sidewalk when walking side by
side, so this also takes some adjustment, and requires me to sometimes walk
behind or in front of my wife to make for enough space.

Anyway, the important thing is that it can be done with a little practice.

Good luck.

My husband and I are both blind. He uses a guide dog; I do not. We do walk
together, but he uses the dog and I use my cane. His current dog is very
new, so when we go out together, I walk behind him and, since he and his dog
walk very fast, he usually waits for me. When he had his previous dog, who
was older, I held his arm, but still used my cane. So, to answer your
question, yes, two blind people can walk together, but the dog only guides
his handler.

To Whom It may Concern:
I have a question relating to guide dogs. I am concerned about if
you walk with a guide dog, can you take someone else with you? Is
there any problem when two blind people walk with the same dog?
I'm asking this question because, let's say that, a blind couple
wants to share the same guide dog while walking together. So, is
that possible?
Also, is there any guide dogs out there that are especially for
people who are allergic to dogs, like those hair but not fur
dogs?
