[Blindtlk] Letter to the Editor Concerning "Dining in the Dark"

I think education of employers, or anyone else, isn't an easy, quick thing.
It takes time and is sometimes not successful. But, as far as employers, if
you talk with them on a one-to-one basis and if you can convince them to
take a chance on you and give you the job, this will go a long way toward
education. After you have the job, you need to work to your potential and
not use blindness as an excuse to get out of doing something you want to do.

Another method of education would be to join service organizations. Many
times, people in the service organizations are the employers of the
community. You can educate by example...showing them that you carry your
weight in the organization and would do the same as an employee. The more
you can involve yourself in your community, the more people will see an
independent blind person and their fears that blind people can't do anything
will gradually disappear. But, it takes a long time. The NFB has been at
it for 70 years, and we're not done, yet. There are always new people to
educate, so we can't give up.

Here is a serious question for those on this list who do not agree with my
opinion on this topic:

How would you educate employers concerning the abilities of a blind person
or persons with other disabilities. Do you believe role playing has any
part in the education process. how would you educate a group of employers
who no very little about individuals with disabilities.]
