[Blindtlk] Guide Dog Training in College

Kelby,

You don't have to be a current guide dog user to join the NAGDU list.
There are several people who are currently actively posting that are in
the process of deciding whether or not a guide dog is for them. We
also have puppy raisers, people in between guides, at least one who has
used a guide in the past but is happy with the return to a cane, at
least one trainer that I know of, a few people representing various
programs and every now and then we get people who use other types of
service dogs. Oh and one or two guide horse users too.

I haven't attended a guide dog program. I train my own guides, but from
what I understand from others the schools will honor your request for a
summer class, but you have to get your name in well in advance since
those spots fill up quickly. If you are starting college in a month or
so, I would start planning now for next summer. You can always change
your mind before you leave for guide dog class, but if you're seriously
thinking about it, I'd suggest starting the application process now. It
can't hurt and then you'll know exactly what your options are.

Best,
Julie, the NAGDU list moderator extraordinaire!
