What I might suggest is that Dianne join the NAGDU list, she will find a lot of people who know these questions including myself.
Also Marion (for those that do not know is the President of NAGDU.org) and is a man, some people still think he is a woman for those newbies.

Hi Dianne,
I'm not a guide dog user, and I see Marion replied to your email,
so he's more an expert on this than I. (I haven't read his email
yet.) I would guess, from what I've heard from guide dog users,
the dog would probably go back to the school you got him/her
from. Then the school would match your dog with another owner.
Guide dog users, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Subject: [Blindtlk] Another Question for the Guide dog Users
Hi Guys,
As many of you know, I have been toying with the idea of trying a
dog for a long time. I just keep weighing the pros and cons, and
haven't yet decided which side to come down on. (smile)
Unfortunately I was not able to attend the division meeting in
Orlando. I just have one quick question for you.
Suppose I decide to take the plunge, and then a few months down
the road realize that this wasn't a good choice for me and I want
to go back to being a cane user? What happens to that dog. Is
the dog just wasted, when it could have gone to someone who was
more sure? Can a dog be reclaimed and given to another user? What
would the options be? I certainly don't want to be responsible
for wasting a valuable animal that I know costs thousands to
train.
Any insight or info would be appreciated.
