I agree completely, Joseph! I'm sorry,
I was a little nervous when you talked about "trolling the list,"
thinking it was my original post that you thought was trolling,
which was really only meant to circulate information. I
understand now. In fact, I was taken aback when Nimer mentioned
the Chicago Lighthouse in a negative way. If you went to
national convention, (and I didn't, unfortunately, I listened to
all the general sessions on the online stream) you may remember
the presentations by the current director of the Chicago
Lighthouse, whose name is escaping me at the moment, and by Jim
Kesteloot, the past director of the Lighthouse about how the
employment opportunities and general conditions of the
lighthouses have changed for the better since the NFB was
founded. In fact, Jim Kesteloot told of how his attitudes about
blindness and the way he directed the Lighthouse changed after
the NFB protested it back in the early 1980's. You can also read
these presentations in the August/September Monitor. All we want
is equal pay for equal work! I'm so shocked by this debate now
that I can't say any more.

It's to suggest that some blind people out there don't deserve
minimum wage.
If they can actually do the work but don't, FIRE THEM and hire
people
who will. If they are physically or mentally unable to do the
job
they've been assigned, then they're doing the wrong job. It's
that
simple. There are lots of people out there who could and would
work
if given the chanceâand yet they remain unemployed because
everyone
agrees that working for two dollars an hour or less isn't
worthwhile.
But Lighthouses for the Blind have been changed from sub-minimum
wage
sweatshops into thriving (and competitively paying) employment
opportunities before, and it's always been to the benefit of all
when
it's happened. All it takes is good management, as with any
other
enterprise.

I am missing the point here. Is the intent to applaud subminimum
wage?
Thanks.

This is beautiful. So now instead of paying below minimum wage
they'll
pay minimum wage and it doesn't even have to be equal work, or
what
others are getting paid for the same profession. Want an
example? Take
a look at the Austin Light House for the Blind.
thanks.

U.S. Representatives Stearns and Bishop Introduce
Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act
National Federation of the Blind Commends Action
Washington, D.C. (October 4, 2011): Congressman Cliff Stearns
(R-FL) and
Congressman Tim Bishop (D-NY) today introduced the Fair Wages
for
Workers with Disabilities Act of 2011 (H.R. 3086). The bill
would phase
out Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which
allows
employers holding special wage certificates to pay their workers
with
disabilities less than the federal minimum wage.
Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the
Blind,
said: "The Fair Wages for Workers with Disabilities Act is a
long-overdue effort to correct an injustice written into a law
meant to
protect all American workers from abuse and exploitation.
Workers with
disabilities were excluded from the protections of the Fair
Labor
Standards Act because of the false belief that we cannot be as
productive as Americans without disabilities. Courage and
creativity
are required to replace the misguided benevolence that has
historically
shaped policies toward people with disabilities with real
opportunity
for our equal employment and full participation in the
workplace. We
applaud Representatives Stearns and Bishop and we hope that a
significant majority of their colleagues possess the courage and
creativity to end over seventy years of exploitation of people
with
disabilities."
"Simple fairness and decency require that workers with
disabilities
receive equal pay for equal work," said Congressman Stearns. "I
am
asking all of my colleagues to join me in this historic effort
to end
wage discrimination against workers with disabilities once and
for all."
"Ensuring that Americans with disabilities receive equal pay for
equal
work is more than a matter of basic fairness, it's a
long-overdue
acknowledgement of the value disabled Americans contribute to
our
workplaces every day," said Congressman Tim Bishop. "I hope all
of my
colleagues will support this bipartisan effort to correct over
seventy
years of injustice."
