[Blindtlk] NFB Is Anti Guide Dog?

Dear All,
I think it is important for us to have credible facts to contradict the
rhetoric of those who would promulgate lies about the NFB in an effort to
shore up their own points of view. I frequently hear the argument from those
who don't really know what I do with the NFB that the Federation is anti
guide dog. I advise them that I am the president of the National Association
of Guide dog Users, a strong and proud division of the National federation
of the Blind - a tag I especially like to use when discussing this issue,I
then question them why the NFB would have such a division if they were anti
guide dog. I also tell them that NAGDU is one of the fastest growing
divisions in the NFB and is now recognized as the leader in service animal
policy and advocacy in the United States.
Here are some of the facts to support this claim. The National
Association of Guide dog Users operates the NAGDU Information & Advocacy
Hotline, a project that was seeded by a grant from the Imagination Fund. I
ask them if they are aware that the reason miniature horses were left in the
definition of a service animal by the DOJ as it published its new
regulations was because the Board of Directors of the National Association
of Guide dog Users made a public comment urging the DOJ to leave them in
until the issue could be studied more since there were several individuals
successfully using miniature horses as guides. (NAGDU was the only comment
that made this appeal and these comments are a part of the public record.)
NAGDU has been sought out by the Florida Agency for Health Care
Administration, the Illinois Attorney General's Office, the California Board
of Guide Dog Schools, several major hospitals, including Johns Hopkins in
Baltimore, St. Anthony's in St. Petersburg, and the Transportation Security
Administration for our expertise on issues related to guide dogs. This is
only a small sampling of the work we have done in our twenty-five years.
If the NFB is so anti guide dog, why is this division such a moving
force? The answer is very clear! We are a moving force on issues of guide
dogs because we are a strong and proud division of the NFB and the NFB is
the strongest force in the affairs of the blind. It only makes sense! For
more information about the National Association of Guide dog Users, a strong
& proud division of the National Federation of the Blind, please visit our
