[Blindtlk] Why do we advocate?

Hi Mary. The answer to the question you asked below is that we do advocate to make things better for blind people. There are, or should be, no wrong questions. Once in a while, I see a post that I absolutely have to reply to, because it hits a nerve. Most of the time, I write it, save it, and see if I want to send it later. Now, should DMV offices be accessible by public transportation? Absolutely. Are they all, absolutely not. In those cases, and if advocacy fails and DMV insists that the only place you can get your identification is at their office that you can't get to, then the only solution is to get someone to drive. I'm sure you do that, as do I, now. Sometimes, I even choose to use a driver when things are perfectly accessible by bus. When the wind chill is forty below, like it gets here and in Iowa, I don't care how accessible it is by bus, I'm taking a car.

I enjoy seeing your posts You, like me, have been around a while, and have managed to survive the digital age, the non-digital age, and can define the words typewriter and optacon. Hang in there. You could live in Wisconsin where they are fighting to make you go to the DMV to get an ID to vote. Oh yes, and in my precinct, they couldn't have found a polling place further away from my house if they had commissioned a study.

Hi, All;

            This will be the very last thing I post. I asked a question and now it's implied that I only associate with blind people. If we're to depend on sighted people to drive us everywhere, why do we as an organization advocate at all? Why advocate for Internet access-just get a neighbor to read things for us!

            I thought this organization was about making life better for blind people. Guess I'd better ask more questions of our leadership before I say any more here. I asked a question, plain and simple. I work full-time and don't need this.

Mary L. McGee
