[Blindtlk] Out Of Sight, seeing through the eyes of kids who are blind.

I think that is the case in most states. Those who have been on this
list for a while will probably remember my positions on the two
organizations working together. Many times on this list, I tried to
suggest that the two organizations work together on issues affecting
all of us, since I thought that we were both working toward the same
goals. I argued that the internal "Civil War" 50 years ago shouldn't
affect relations between the two organizations today. As I learned
more about both organizations and what they stood for, I realized that
this could not happen anytime soon. Now, I find myself agreeing with
what NFB is for the most part doing: doing our own thing and letting
ACB do theirs. If we all can work together on some issues, I'm all for
that. But partnership is a two-way street, and unless ACB is really
willing to come together, I think we should just leave them alone. I
do know one thing for sure: although I try to stay informed about what
the ACB is doing, I personally choose the Federation.

I have seen both orgunizations fight side by side in issues like the political battle over the Oregon School for the Blind which we lost spectacularly. Outside of the big issues like that one, we at the NFB of Oregon tends to minds our own business and the ACB of Oregon usually minds their own business.

My understanding, too, is that the ACB is more of a social organization, leaving main decisions to their board members rather than the membership. In some states both organizations work amicably together, but am not sure if this is true in all states. In our state of Idaho, the NFB is predominant.

When I learned of the rich history of blind people as a minority, I realized how much I'd taken for granted, and want to give back what I can to the organization in any way I can.
