Hi Peter,
As I read your post, my thought was to recommend Hadley, but I noted at the
end of your post that you were aware of this resource. I had another idea
though.
I noted that you said you already had a degree. I'm not sure exactly where
you are located or which universities, if any, are around you. However, some
of the universities have "English as a second language," or remedial English
courses.
We had an investigator at work whose first language was Spanish. She
appeared to be verbally fluent in English, but I guess her writing skills
needed some work. So the agency sent her to a course at the local university
to learn the basics of English writing and try to improve her skills. Maybe
you could look into something like that. They may even have online courses.
Now the down side to this option is that it likely won't be free, and I have
no idea whether this would be feasible for you financially. I'm not sure
whether you could get loans for a single course or not. But I just thought I
would offer this as a suggestion.
I don't think you need to worry about being ridiculed here. Like any group
of individuals, we disagree with each other from time to time, and it has
been known to get a little heated occasionally. But I think there is a
general code of respect on this list. You are among friends here.

Subject: [Blindtlk] Suggestions on being a better writer being blind later
in life
To those humble souls better writers than me:
Where would you recommend someone to start to become a better english
writer for older blind persons like myself? I wasn't born with congenial
blindness, but became blind with an LHON heredetary disease at the age of
seveenteen. I never had a particular good upbringing of being beaten on by
an alcoholic father, so never had the education that I could have had in a
better environment. Being raised in a single family home that the attention
was given to my older siblings not me. I don't even know the basic grammar
rules that much not even real basics at all. Lastly, I did get a GED
(General Education
Diploma) and even a bachelors of arts in political science still english
grammar elludes me and tired of being ridiculed on lists such as ACB-Chat,
online forums and other places cause of something beyond my control.
Secondly, I'll explain what I'm working with home so you are better
informed of how to help me. I am fairly fluent with literary braille 1 and 2
(contracted) braille. I'm not familar with nemeth, computer or music braille
at all. I own a Perkin's Brailler that is in storage that is quite a
distance from me without paper. I use Window-Eyes with no Office Suites
installed with Word, Excell, Access or Powerpoint on this machine just
notepad and word pad I'm afraid. No audio equipment or even a flat bed
scanner either just in case you were wondering nor state and stylist or
anything remotely like them here.
Lastly, I am only part of the National Library Service not part of
either Bookshare or Learning Alli either neither of which had the books that
is right for my learning ways for a remedial english writer. I ordered for
the numerous times english grammar book one volume from NLS without it
showing up at all. I keep e-mailing and calling without any success in
Montgomery, Al at all. This isn't the first time the last time was a year
ago. I am aware of the Hadley School just want more resources to decide what
direction to do it in.
Thank you for any online resources or anything and if your going to be
negative don't reply or comment on the post at all. I don't have the time or
energy whether you were part of the lists or corresponded with me on this
matter or anything else. Life is too short to waste my or your time with
making a pointless argument that you think your smarter or bred better or
come from high class society cause I don't care.
Thank you so much,
Peter
