[Blindtlk] Getting a new cane?

Hi Carley,
For a long time I didn't want to use any type of canes. I always depended on
my late husband and did sighted guide.
Now it is all up to me. I really like using my cane now.
I have both folding and collapsible and like them both.

Good evening, Gloria,
Indeed, the FREE canes available from the NFB, are still
straight. I think I prefer those to their collapsible counterparts.
Upon going to the CCB while in high school however, I remembered
being horrified by the straight cane, felt it was a
terrible imposition although before I got it, I never imagined how,
in spite of my pretty active lifestyle of buses, trains and other
places I couldn't see myself negotiating a straight cane. Now that
i've been using it for a while, I find it to work just fine. On the
bus, I just hold it upright in front of me. Inside public places or
in class, I simply lay it beneath my feet.
So, if you need a cane but are a little short on cash, GOOGLE NFB
free canes. See where it gets ya.
