I originally got JAWS via a friend, and knew only that it would help me use the computer without sight. I didn't know anything about rehabilitation. I just started playing around on the computer using the screenreader. I had a lot of motivation because the computer was my only connection to the world during the day when I was alone and had no one to take me anywhere. I would spend hours working on learning basic hotkeys and how to check my email. I used the tutorials available through the screenreader, and over time got better and better. After about two years, I was recommended to the state rehabilitation center, but when they tested my computer skills, they found I needed very little training in that area.
I know that I an something of an exception. I taught myself the Braille alphabet before going to the center. But with the right amount of motivation and the right tools, you might be able to teach yourself the screenreader. Just be patient with yourself.
My two cents,
jewel
