[Blindtlk] medical billing

For someone who still does medical billing, since I was one of the 1st to take the course as a blind student out here on Long Island from 2007-2008. The course is wonderful, if you are going into this venture, go to a school that offers it, go to the school, ask to see the program that the school will be using, test it out. The School should let you do this, let them know either yourself or your commission for the blind through your state will pay for it.
More then likely they are a school, that is a state affiliate program, even the smaller vocational schools offer school assistance, whether it is a PELL Grant etc, if they don't then don't go there.
The reason being they will give you a hard time on testing the programs.
The class I did back in 2007 had an inaccessible program, but that didn't stop me, we got a program that was similar installed through the school that was inaccessible format.
Do not take a 3 week or 4 months course, you should take a program that goes at least into 6-9 months, because they go into not just medical billing part, but things you should know like anatomy, not like a doctor does, but it helps when doing the bill, the course should also offer medical coding, this is done in the hospital, and you get more money etc.
I did when I got out of school, I worked in a medical lab and did all the collections from the insurance companies who were not paying, I called them, and got them to pay. I was 1 of 2 people working in this department.
I did wind up in a court case with them, due to issues with working there, and mental distress.
But, I also do it on the side for time to time for local doctors here through my community, and I do it from home.
Not all doctors will do this, FYI, the medical billing field is saturated, and it is hard to get a coding job in the hospitals, you really need to know someone to get your foot in the door.
The jobs used to pay higher because it a specialty job, now not so much.
Just to let you know.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
