I firmly believe that thousands of problems are solved each day by thousands 
of blind persons, through negotiation and diplomacy.  These are issues one 
never hears about, as they are solved.  Because one hears about the law 
suits and legal cases, makes it seem like that's what the NFB does all the 
time, not true.

Hi, Aleeha. I agree that talking should always precede legal action. Of
course, it doesn't hurt to know what one's rights are before having that
talk. Unfortunately there are times when we have to file a suit in order to
get the attention of the people who refuse to talk to us until they find we
are rattling their cage. I think many people wrongly believe that we sue
first and ask questions later. Our lawsuits come after attempts to
negotiate, and, as you will learn from the August September issue of the
Braille Monitor, being involved in lawsuits doesn't always require that we
be adversarial. See what the legal counsel from the University of Montana
has to say about the team that swooped in to work with them.

Why must we immediately jump to legal solutions? I am in favor of a gentle
conversation first, followed by complaints, and, in the most extreme cases,
legal action. It is not appropriate to pursue legal action right from the
get-go. It just makes it worse image for the rest of us, and requires us to
work harder to seem like reasonable individuals.
