I think I feel the same way. Every time I concede to such demands as to take a seat I feel at least badly. But at the same time, I do really think sometimes there are battles to be picked. And yet, sometimes there isn’t enough time to determine if you have picked or let go the right one.

I suspect that's why subway riders in the city are often called straphanggers.
