  Thanks so much for checking that. I kind of figured that was likely the case. I thought I had remembered that when I had vision, you could see the outlines but I did not have enough vision to know if they could actually be identified:). This is really helpful!

Well, this e-mail exchange of thoughts and possible solutions has turned out to be very informative. I had not thought of taking a photocopy of the card and blowing it up to be read by one of the reader apps. Although one must be careful to delete the image on today's modern computerised photocopiers since it is stored on the machine.

Regarding the possible reading of the stamped information from the back of the card, I have checked with a friend and, you are quite correct. The information that is stamped on credit and debit cards is legible from the back. The number, card-holder's name, and the expiration date are all able to be read from the back of the card, they are just backwards to the reader. 
Anyone could take a photo and they would, indeed, have all the information. 
So, it would seem safest only to ask people in person, so they would tell one the three digit security code and the card could immediately be withdrawn from view. I can totally understand how one would feel the need to be cautious on Be My Eyes, but personally, if I was in a pinch, I might try it, trusting to the brevity of the conversation to prevent any taking of photos.
As I said, each to their own level of risk-taking. And, as mother always said, better to be safe than sorry.

  I guess a part of why I am concerned about doing it with something like Be My Eyes is that even the developer of that app has explicitly and emphatically stated that users should NOT show anything personal (he gave examples of: any part at all of a credit card and mail that is personally
identifying...) as the sighted members of the app are  not specifically
pre-screened) so it is not safe to do so. In other words, it is the same idea as just taking a picture of that part of your credit card, posting it to the public part of your Facebook page or twitter account, and saying, can anyone out there read this for me.

I think if you become that paranoid about getting sighted assistance, then you are going to have a lot of things not read. If you give your card to a waiter, if you hand it to someone to run on an inaccessible ATM machine, if you put it in an ATM machine and someone has a skimmer behind you, someone can get your information. You just have to be watching for it to happen as I did. You really don't want to live like this. In the amount of time you are spending trying to find a way to read it, you can have had it read and you can be pretty sure it was read accurately. Mostly the volunteers on bemyeyes.org are fairly likely to be trustworthy, and if they are not, then they will surely be banned. I hope one day we can easily read these cards, but I think currently, you just have to go with good old trust.

  That is a good point, however, I am assuming, and maybe this is wrong, but because the letters are raised and you can feel their indentations in the back side, I would assume that someone using the other end of the Be My Eyes app could take a picture of the back of your card (say with someone else'
iPhone while talking with you)...) of what you are showing them and be able to figure out that info. Since your credit card or bank's name along with the letters ATM are on the back of the card, if they can see the letter indentations from the front side, they now have all of your info (credit card number, possibly date of expiration, security code, and card type and possibly bank location. As I said, my assumption here may be completely wrong.

I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly. In my experience, the pin number is sent in a separate envelope from the ATM card. So, the pin number never appears on the card of the paper to which the card comes attached. The pin number is not associated with any other numbers on the sheet it appears on. So, in my experience, there is no pin number on a card.

It sounds to me as if what you are wanting is the three digit security code, not a pin number.

If it's the security code, then this typically appears on the back of the card. So, nobody you asked to read the security code to you would be able to see the numbers and other identifying bank information that is written on the front of the card.
In a situation like this, I'd be much happier to use a stranger on Be My Eyes than I would be to use a neighbour, since a stranger on the other side of this appw would have no other info than three little numbers which they read out. Besides, one can use Be My Eyes from the comfort of your own home.

I wouldn't use a service like Be My Eyes dot ORG to read all the info on the front of the card, since that includes the card number and the expiration date. However, I'd be fine about having them read the three numbers of the security code from the back.
Seems to me, these days, that using a card to shop online or to pay in a store or restaurant is more risky than having a person read the three numbers on the back of the card.
Just my thoughts, of course. Each to their own level of personal risk.

The one thing I can think of is that you could do face time or Skype with someone if you have a phone, which you must since you  tried  KNFB  reader, and then they could look at the card.
