Hi Chris,
That is a great question. The way we programmed the auto sleep function
is that a change in distance of more than 10 -15 cm from the distance at
which it went to sleep will reactivate the device. Since the vibration
signal is base on the distance, it vibrates stronger and more frequently
as the distance decrease and the opposite if the distance increase. Say
the person in front of you is 0.5m away when the device went to sleep
for example. If the person moves a little bit, less that 15cm. Now they
are 0.6m away. The device won't reactivate as there is no need for you
to move forward for just 10cm. If they take a regular step forward
(50cm) to be 1m away, the device will reactivate and generate vibration
that corresponds to 1m which will be a lot slower and weaker compare to
the vibration right before it went to sleep. It will be fairly easy for
the user to understand what is going on as the difference in vibratory
signal very distinctive. (Example would be the difference of someone
hammering at the door as opposed to someone knocking regularly at a much
smaller scale). The reason for the sleep mode was so that the user won't
have to reach up and toggle the device every time.
