[Blindtlk] question about card games

Hi Anne,

I've been to a number of casinos, and I tend to play blackjack if I play
anything at all. I am a totally blind person and have had no problem
playing. I do find it helpful, however, to have a sighted wingman, only
because it is helpful to know what cards others have been dealt. As for my
own cards, just about every dealer I've had is happy to tell me what card he
or she has facing up, and what I've been dealt. The players cards in
blackjack are dealt face up anyway, so all can see them. You aren't allowed
to touch your own cards anyway, so it's not like sighted players can pick
them up and scrutinize them.

I've played at some fairly high end places, like the Luxor and Bellagio in
Vegas, and some quieter downscale places as well. I just buy maybe $20 to
$100 in chips and play as long as I can with what I can win. On occasion
I've turned $20 into more than a hundred just playing blackjack, where the
odds are fairly decent compared to things like slots, Keno, or roulette if
you play the numbers and not the colors.

All that to say that it is possible for a blind person to do it. I will say
that in general I don't enjoy casinos, as I find them difficult to navigate
-- so do sighted people, for that matter... They are designed to not make it
easy for anyone to leave them. Plus they are noisy, Smokey, and basically
just machines for sucking all dollars and hope from those who enter.

Still, it's interesting to experience a casino once just to see how they
work... It's quite a weird and fascinating world to enter.

Good luck.

Brian Miller

Subject: [Blindtlk] question about card games

Hi-
I don't know if this question is relevant to this list or not, but I thought
I'd try.
I am wondering if anyone has experience with going to the casino as a blind
person? Specifically, how do you participate in card games? Is it possible
to participate in that sort of setting?
When you have a small group of people you know, it is easy to just break out
the braille cards, and maybe have more verbal communication, but what about
a casino type situation?
Thanks.
Anne
