Hi Roanna,
From reading your posts I do know that you are in college currently. You did ask a very general question, but I know for myself in the 80s, I had no assistance. I've never attended a school for the blind as my parents felt I would learn braille either way so I might as well just stay in the public schools. A friend of mine and I went to the high school with our schedules and walk the halls trying to figure out where things were. We also did this switching from grade school to middle school. The only adaptations I had and public-school were large print books for some classes. I never knew textbooks came on tape until I started college in 1990. At that time I could use a CCTV more of the time and did most of my homework at school because that's where it was located. I did not have the CCTV until high school. My younger sisters read things to me in high school when my parents did not have time. I only got two weeks of mobility training in my small community in middle school. I too had no TVi so I had to learn how to advocate for myself and be creative. I did have one lady who kind a help me with my math but other than that I was on my own. I weaseled out of driver's ed which I have regretted it ever cents and was not allowed to take shop. There are things that I wish I had available at the time, but I have to say I could've been dumped in special ed classes where people didn't know how to help me or put into adaptive Phy ed. which they did not do. For the time I was in school, I think I was quite blast. Minus math I've never had academic problems when I went to college. There's things I need, but they can be remedied because they're blindness skills. The social skills that I learned in public school are priceless. Believe me I did not get away with anything just because I was visually impaired! I was caught cheating with a friend on a test in the library and we both got in trouble. Thank you Mrs. Heitkamp!

My mobility teacher and went to the school for a tour before the begninning of my 6th-grade year. We had to put all of the braillers in my class before the first day of school. I'd love to hear what you have to say about this topic.
