Hi Sandra. I can remember rehab counselors who started sentences to me  with the "why would..." preface. The answer is, I don't know why someone would want to do anything. Is there a way that I don't know that blind people can be life guards? Let me set one u for you. How about using an observer? They watch and direct. How would they communicate? Let's be creative. I can think of several ways using technology off the shelf. I think they could do the job. 
Now the original question, was "is there someone out there, who is blind, who has worked as a lifeguard?" Let's see what pops up. Perhaps they can answer questions about how, and why.

Hello:

Are the rest of you missing something here?  I might get some of you mad at me but, why in the world would a totally blind person even consider being a lifeguard, and why would any counselor even give that job consideration?
You have to see in order to act quickly to find the person in trouble.
Every second matters in an emergency.  I know as blind people we can do almost anything but,, we also have to be realistic.  There will always be some things that are not safe for us to do.  I personally would not feel safe if I knew a blind person was a lifeguard on duety if my children were in that pool.  Face it, there are just some things we cannot do.  Get real folks, admit you are blind and choose a job that is more suitable.

Now I will be the first to say that I don't know of a totally blind lifeguard. I  have figured out, however, that there is generally someone who has done most of the jobs that I think may not be possible. If your client has residual vision, this can help. I do know of a former student of mine who successfully passed the tests and qualified. If this will help, please let me know. I will share the person's contact information off list.
