[Blindtlk] I need to hear back from anyblind person who has worked as a lifeguard.

I don't understand the negative reactions to this question. If someone
answers her question, it is a given that they have to have an explanation of
what they do, and it has to be good enough to satisfy whomever is employing
that person. We tend to immediately think of a lifeguard sitting up in a
lifeguard tower. I readily admit I can't imagine how a totally blind person
could do that effectively. However, I could easily imagine situations where
a lifeguard is required for a small group of people, and in that case it
could be possible given the right person and the right situation. I am
probably reacting to this a little because much of the public would say the
same thing about many things that we do. It has certainly been said about
blind people parenting, for example. I certainly believe that a blind
person wanting to be a lifeguard would have to be able to prove they could
do the job, but one really would have to know more about the particular
position to make a fair judgement.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hello:

Are the rest of you missing something here? I might get some of you mad at
me but, why in the world would a totally blind person even consider being a
lifeguard, and why would any counselor even give that job consideration?
You have to see in order to act quickly to find the person in trouble.
Every second matters in an emergency. I know as blind people we can do
almost anything but,, we also have to be realistic. There will always be
some things that are not safe for us to do. I personally would not feel
safe if I knew a blind person was a lifeguard on duety if my children were
in that pool. Face it, there are just some things we cannot do. Get real
folks, admit you are blind and choose a job that is more suitable.

Sandra

Yes, she did. That being said, I'll back out and see if someone else has
something to contribute.

The person is totally blind. Did your person have some vision?

Judy

Now I will be the first to say that I don't know of a totally blind
lifeguard. I have figured out, however, that there is generally someone who
has done most of the jobs that I think may not be possible. If your client
has residual vision, this can help. I do know of a former student of mine
who successfully passed the tests and qualified. If this will help, please
let me know. I will share the person's contact information off list.

Hi,

The obvious question is how will a blind lifeguard know when a swimmer is
drowning?

We have a client that would like to work as one, please let me hear feedback
from anyone who has done this.

Thanks very much.
