Hi Beebee. The model white cane law was put forward by the NFB in the late 1950's. Some states already had a low, but this became the standard. Of course it gave direction to driver that they should stop when a blind person was crossing a street, that is the part we all know. The other thing it did, was to allow blind people to enter places normally available to the public, such as stores, businesses and offices. It further declared that blindness was not evidence of contributory negligence, meaning that the blind person was not acting irresponsibly by being out in public at all. You can read more about it in BUILDING THE LIVES WE WANT: SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND.

Subject: [Blindtlk] white cane day

Hi, all,
Tomorrow is national white cane day.
We still have a lot of work to do with it as I'm finding more motorists could care less about the white cane law.
I am interested in looking up the history of how white cane da came about and the importance.
I'm going to practice it on my IPhone 5S.
Bibi and Odieless
