[Blindtlk] white cane day

Good Morning,
You know you are right about Motorists.  However, a lot of pedestrians do
not care either about white canes.  They are too involved in their techno
toys and do not watch where they are going.  At least this is my experience.
I understand  accidental running into each other and have apologized.  Some
people have apologized to me.  However, there are many people who just act
like nothing happened.  Some have even become angry at me.  Another problem
I am facing, here in Berkeley, is people sitting in the middle of the side
walks.  Some of them get very abusive if I run into them or even touch them
with the white cane.

I think it is about time that we assert our rights as blind people.  I have
turned several people into the local police, especially when I almost fell
over someone lying on the sidewalk.  I have also let people know in a stern
voice to watch where they are going.  In addition, I have pointed to my
white cane and asked them if they knew what the cane symbolizes.  Some young
people and people who did not understand English, did not know about the
white cane.  I explained it to them.  However, it is shameful that parents
do not teach their children about white canes.  Also, many schools teach
about disability, they do not do good enough of a job to let kids know to be
careful.

We still have a lot of work to do with it as I'm finding more motorists
could care less about the white cane law.

and the importance.
