[BlindTlk] Computers for the blind

Ericka,

I'm not certain that I completely understand your situation. Those who produce software such as Vispero have the right to define their pricing based upon how their software is used. They can tell you that you can't use your home license on a work machine. Obviously, if you used your home computer at work, it would be hard for them to ever figure that out. If you had a professional license, though, you could install it on a work machine and you could still use that on your home machine. You could likely upgrade your home license to a professional license for less money than buying a new professional license, but your agency may not pay to upgrade your home license. The advantage to you having one license to deal with is that upgrades will cost you less in the future. You will pay something every year to upgrade both your home and your professional license, so having a single license to upgrade will cost less. As far as I know, using your professional license on a work machine and at home is permitted. Obviously, it would be good to check that out for certain, though.

It is getting less and less the case that an employer will allow you to use your own computer in a workplace, though. If they do let you use your own computer, it is more likely that they may want their virus checker and possibly other protective software to be used. The Professional version of JAWS would let you install it on their machine. Some smaller employees are more likely to be glad to find a way to save some money by having you use your own computer thereby leaving one of theirs available for somebody else. Suggesting that you bring your computer for use because you have a screen reader on it already seems a little shabby, though, as it sounds like they are just saving a computer more than anything.

The whole landscape is getting more complicated with work machines. Ten years ago, I was able to use a desktop at work and also install all of my work software on my home machine. However, it is no longer possible to do anything for work on my home computer except email, and that is not easy. There are restrictions on what I can update on my work computer as well. Some employers lock that down completely to the extent that an IT professional might have to install JAWS and even update JAWS. This is all done for security and also to make sure that software on a computer is not pirated.

I hope this makes some sense.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

It depends on what the situation is and of course I would ask permission. Actually for my temporary work experience at Goodwill in their office they were wondering if I had a computer to bring in with speech software already on it. Since that isn’t the case DVR will be doing the subscription thing. Should I let my counselor know that I should have the professional version? After all this is something I will be able to take from workplace to workplace. I understand that it works differently than the home version which of course would be on a Computers For The Blind machine which would be fine for home use.
