Yes, and there are stores that have policies that assistants may not accept 
tips, it is going to depend on the store.  They are making a salary anyway, 
albeit low, depending on the store.  I just let them know how much their 
help is appreciated and thank them.  I have ended up with some good friends 
that I originally met when shopping.

hi, I  go to the service desk and ask for assistance, and walk down the
isles with he or she so that I know what is being chosen  as well  as
handling the items as necessary. I haven't paid the store employee  I
don't usually call ahead and sometimes there can be a wait time of a few
minutes to get assistance but that is fine with me.
