I would suggest starting out by looking for internships at places which focus on your field of study. These internships are great ways to build your resume and get good professional references, as well as getting a head start on your networking. If you can get it, a paid internship is always a plus! There's nothing wrong with asking the people running your internship if there is a possibility for a stipend or salary.
As for entry-level jobs like the ones you mention, stores would probably be the best option. However, they sometimes won't clearly advertise their open positions. So sometimes you have to "cold call" them and ask them what is available. Hope this helps!
