No scanner here so I haven't yet tried these. Cuneiform tesseract lios
ocr-desktop are four ocr packages that's available and lios was made with
accessibility for screen readers in mind. The sane package can be used to
run scanners. This needs configuration but does work.

For example, is there an easy way to read printed documents on Linux? With Open Book on Windows, it is easy once your scanner is set up. Start Open Book and press Space to scan a page. That?s it. Is there anything like OpenBook for Linux? If you are involved in ACB or NFB, you use Zoom nowadays. Is that doable on Linux?

It's so bad people don't learn how to handle a missing or dead battery on the motherboard of a computer and aren't familiar with the cmos interface once that comes up. Admittedly it's an infrequent event about every five years or so but can be pretty basic to handle when it happens. Another deficiency is service pack conflicts that happen during windows updates. Where I'm at since we had noone on the staff who knew how to clear the error, a laptop got thrown out.

I cannot afford anything because I?m not working and all the money my husband does make plus what little I get for SSDI goes towards life expenses. Unfortunately this curriculums doesn?t even happen in NFB training centers. I certainly do agree with how you?ve got it all laid out. So when are you writing this ?small chunks of success? curriculum? I?ll be the big guinea pig! I?ve never seen anything like this. I learned Braille quite well, but never really got comfortable on a computer.. many teachers assume that if you can send email via your phone this can go as a transferable skill and you know more than you really do when it comes to actual computers. How are you operate an iPhone email and how you operate an HP laptop for example is very, very different when you?re blind or have a little bit of vision.

That in and of itself necessarily leads to several early failures in the exposure process and when starting with training processes early successes are necessary as building blocks for the failures which will arrive shortly. The fact that most people getting initial jaws exposure do it as a result of Federal State County or municipal employment where no accessible training plans or budgets exist and no effective challenge tests exist to prove the employee already has the capability and knowledge and doesn't need the training do not exist doesn't help matters either. I know, I've been there done that and got the T-Shirt to prove it. Now, from me having gone through that meat grinder, what could be done better?

Listen to those on a separate dvd player and those need to be small chunks of material followed by specific tasks to try and maybe have someone knowledgeable about the training see what happens on the computer and tell the trainee how to back out of the mistake they just made and how to do that part of the exercise correctly.

If you want to shop at Wallmart learn to like Jaws so you can do so and use other screen readers for other applications and Internet resources you can access with them. Take off the limits and shop until you drop on www.wallmart.com. All the best.
