Hi, Tom,
I say, whatever works for you. But my question is, what did as use in school to pass your math classes? I would start with that system.
How
do you handle math in your personal life, try that system to start with.
Things have really changed in the classroom for sighted and blind students since I was in school, and even since our daughters were in school. Everyone used to have to learn to borrow and carry, do long division, etc., good skills to have when a calculator is not available.
But the calculator is what people use now, is competitive, so it will depend on what your classes require.
I grew up using the Taylor slate, which is great, because you can see your computations laid out in front of you in the same way a sighted person would see them, in columns and rows. I still have mine, too, although no longer use it, but could. Speedwise, a blind person could keep up with his classmates using a pencil or pen.
