Churches and Accessibility
I have had similar experiences with churches and accommodations. Most do
not want to make any changes. Rides are a big problem. If there is no
transportation ministry, you have to rely on rides from members. There are
many people with kind hearts who are willing to give rides. That being
said, those rides are quite temporary. I've found that 3 months is about
the average time for it to work. I've experienced this so many times that I
will not attend a church without a transportation ministry unless I can
take a bus there independently for all services/bible studies, etc.
Teaching about disabilities does help. I do training for churches that
includes a biblical perspective on a church's responsibility to people with
disabilities. Once the Pastor and the leaders understand and are on board,
things go smoother. Promoting a culture of inclusion is the secret. There
should be people with disabilities serving at all levels. It may take time
to get there but if there is understanding things should move along
quickly. If excuses are continuous then it is only lip service. Actions
speak louder than words.
I once had a pastor who said he wanted to include people with disabilities,
but when he had an opportunity to build a ramp to the stage for no extra
money than he was already spending on building the stage, he wouldn't
include the ramp. That action eliminated anyone with mobility impairments
to be on the stage.
However, all-in-all there have been improvements over the past 10 years or
so. There are several resources churches can take advantage of. Those who
do have the right heart and are willing to be inclusive. Those who don't
are stuck in the past.
