Hi, thanks for this. Instead of getting a slate from Amazon, I highly
recommend getting a free one from www.nfb.org. When you go to our main page,
the free slate link is right there on the home page.

I don't recommend this item for a couple reasons.
First the whole set is made entirely of plastic.
This means the tip of the stylus feels threads in the paper as the stylus
moves on the paper, doesn't happen with metal tips.
That though isn't the best reason to pass this item by.
The best reason is sides of all cells in the top leaf of the slate are flat.
Metal slates had semicircles between dot positions so someone writing with
those slates could have an idea what dot they were about to write. Where
the dots went in a metal slate was between the top or bottom of the cell and
a semicircle or between two semicircles if on dots 2 and 5. This is not a
good slate for anyone new to braille since it will be frustrating to use.
