Have you looked into dog gates or even baby gates.  They have some that are
collapseable, widening when needed or closing up. V

Any ideas for how to block off a kitchen that's too wide for a gate?  I 
don't want to block off the hallway, since it leads to the kids' room, so I 
just close the doors to the bathroom and my room.
