Hey Mike,
When I was pregnant with my daughter my guide dog was very protective over
me. She would follow me everywhere, even to the bathroom. If I would close a
door to a room I went into she would lay outside that door until I came out.
I thought because of this behavior that my dog would be very protective over
my baby. She didn't seem to be though. I mean she doesn't show aggressive
behavior towards people or anything if they were near the baby. She
definitely seemed more careful with her guide work anytime I was wearing my
daughter in the snugli. She would slow down, and seemed more cautious of
large cracks in the sidewalk.
After my daughter was born she had to stay in the hospital for a week. I had
my dog at the hospital with me part of the time. The first time we
introduced the baby and dog I just held the baby at my dogs level, and let
her see the baby. She sniffed her a little, but other than that really
didn't interact any. We did keep my dog from licking the baby for several
months. My dog is quite the licker, so we did have to keep on top of this.
My daughter is 2 now, and we haven't had any issues with my dog being
aggressive or anything towards her. If my daughter is doing something to the
dog that isn't liked my dog just moves away from her. She has growled at her
a couple of times to pretty much tell her to knock it off. They are great
together, and like to play at times. My daughter now enjoys helping me feed
and take the dog outside. Oh in case this makes a difference to you my dog
is a yellow lab.
